As this year draws to a close, we want to thank all our volunteers for their prayerful support and fundraising efforts. Your partnership in this gospel mission means that Scripture Readers can go ‘behind the wire’ and come alongside troops. ASR Paul Curd, Scripture Reader at Edinburgh Garrison, shared how he was able to meet a new soldier on camp:
‘On my way to Glencorse Barracks one Tuesday, I prayed for an opportunity to share Christ. In the cookhouse over lunch, a young soldier—his first day on camp after basic training—sat next to me and asked me what a Scripture Reader is. He said he’d been looking into Christianity and baptism, and he particularly liked the moral teachings of Jesus. I explained that Jesus is so much more than that; that Jesus, the Son of God, came down to us because we cannot, by our good works, get to Him. I shared that baptism is an outward sign of inner change. He liked this, saying how cool it was. He was keen to know more, and he now comes to our lunchtime fellowship on camp.’

In a culture that has only subjective truth, Christianity offers a truth that transcends the present philosophies. Today, our Scripture Readers are finding soldiers to be more open than ever to the truth of the gospel. Having churches partner with us enables our work of sharing the good news to continue and develop. Our Advocates (SASRA’s official ‘point-of-contact’ in their church) have been busy raising funds for this mission field, sharing prayer requests from our Scripture Readers and rejoicing with us when prayers are answered. Such practical and spiritual support is profoundly powerful – one Scripture Reader said he can ‘feel the prayers’ which help him to have the courage to say something of value.
