Let's pray together
Every year during the first week of January, my church organises a ‘Week of Prayer’. There are prayer meetings every evening Monday to Friday and anyone who is able, gathers in the building and over the course of the week, we pray through the needs of the church, the needs of the area and of the world.
As Christians, we are aware that prayer is an important spiritual discipline and a vital part of our faith, so we see the wisdom in a Week of Prayer to start the year. It directs our focus and reminds us of how we rely on God for everything. It is also good for us to gather together to pray, we read in Acts 2:42 that the early church, ‘devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.’
As an organisation, we are grateful for our supporters who daily lift our Scripture Readers to the Lord in prayer, and once a month we have the opportunity to do that together and pray for those same needs at our VPMs (Virtual Prayer Meetings).
God Hears Our Prayers
In the Spring 2024 Edition of the Ready magazine, we shared the story of a soldier named Callum (name changed) who we had been praying for. Scripture Reader Josh Fortune wrote:
‘Callum is an ex-soldier that many of you have prayed for. He’s a dear fellow who has struggled incredibly with alcoholism, complex Post-traumatic stress disorder and intense mood-swings. In the last twelve months alone, a number of us Scripture Readers have been on the receiving end of phone calls that raised serious welfare concerns at all times of day (and night).

“Lord, we know you are able to save – and to do abundantly more than we can ask or think – please, save Callum…” was a prayer that was uttered by people around the country. I must confess that I prayed with little faith in my heart. This dear man seemed too far gone and so resistant to the gospel, was he beyond saving? “Oh you of little faith,” I can imagine the Lord Jesus saying to me now because Callum has now professed faith in Christ!’
Your prayers as supporters played a part in Callum’s journey to faith, and his story is not unique, there are many more soldiers who have never heard of the hope that Jesus offers to them.
We want to encourage you to join with us in prayer for our Scripture Readers, for the work they do and the individuals they work with. Come along tomorrow for our first VPM of 2026 and to future prayer meetings, as we continue to commit this vital work and its needs to God; ‘Till now the Lord has helped us.’ (1 Samuel 7:12)
