ASR Miskelly running a Bible study at Leuchars Station.
September marks both endings and beginnings. The weather turns, and we say goodbye to a hot summer in exchange for milder days and cooler evenings. New school years are starting, or maybe it’s back to work after some time off.
Every season brings different opportunities with it for our Scripture Readers. Up in Fife, Scotland, Scripture Reader John Miskelly took the back-to-work season as a chance to host a ‘Welcome Back’ BBQ for the soldiers he works with at Leuchars Station. John and his wife Lorna were unsure of how many (or if any at all) would turn up, but they ended up with fifty-two soldiers along with six spouses and a handful of children too.
John shared that, ‘this was an outstanding night with amazing gospel sharing opportunities and lots of biblical literature taken as well we praise the Lord for this. Lorna and I were totally blown away by the numbers. We didn’t get the opportunity to take photos of the event as we talked, talked and talked until hoarse. After we cleaned up, we locked the doors and being totally honest we wept and just sat in prayer until we went home. We honestly did not expect so many to come—thankfully, all were fed and watered!
The next morning some of the officers stopped by to ask how the event had gone. When I shared the number the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) said he would struggle to get those sorts of numbers if he put on a BBQ. Well, as Christians we believe in the power of prayer. God heard and God answered, all praise to Him.
This has also been a good building block for events in the future. We’re thinking of doing a curry and quiz night for the station next! As a result of the BBQ, numbers have increased at my Tuesday lunchtime meeting and a couple of soldiers said they would attend the Saturday morning gym session I arrange as well.’

PRAY WITH US

- Praise God who hears and answers our prayers.
- Praise God that so many attended the ‘Welcome Back’ BBQ at Leuchars Station.
- Give thanks for the many conversations that John and Lorna had with military personnel and their families. Pray the words shared would resonate in hearts and minds and that the gospel literature received would be read.
