Over the season of Remembrance, as the nation once again turns its attention towards the military community, we’re looking to mobilise SASRA supporters between 1 and 11 November to help us raise awareness and funds.
To double the number of Scripture Readers, we will need to double the number of SASRA supporters. We have been asking passionate supporters of our work if they could share that passion with a friend or family member who may not have heard of us before, or do a fundraiser for SASRA. Last year, SASRA Development Officer Gareth Bartlett raised over £450 by reading eleven chapters of the Bible each day, for eleven days!
This year, SASRA supporter Alice Longwe was inspired to do a bake sale alongside the local Art Club’s Christmas Fayre. The preparation started a month prior to the sale, as Alice and her friend Katrina sought donations.
I was inspired to do the bake sale thanks to Laura Reuter (SASRA Prayer Coordinator) who suggested supporters might consider a fundraising venture! Kind folk from both the church and local community were delighted to donate homemade tablet, drizzle cake, brownies and scones. Our beekeeper friends donated jars of honey. The Lesmahagow bees had been buzzing busily down at the willows to ensure SASRA might benefit!

On the day, they had a lovely display of home baking, jams and honey, which quickly vanished into shopper’s bags. As well as edibles, Alice had lavender bags, knitted lambs and SASRA books and stationery.
The Christmas sweet bags and tablet were a hit with the youngsters who ensured that the knitted lambs soon skipped off the display. SASRA’s book, Fight of Faith, was popular and was purchased together with pens and keyrings. By midday, we were tired but satisfied. After packing up, we went to the church café for a hot cuppa. May the Lord bless the work of SASRA!
Alice and Katrina’s efforts raised £255 for SASRA. Could you encourage anyone in your church to do a SASRA fundraiser? If you could raise funds for our work, please let us know. Set up your own fundraiser for SASRA at justgiving.com/sasra
