Scripture Readers have many kinds of opportunities to engage with soldiers and aviators. From joining a table in the mess hall for lunch, popping into offices to say hi, attending health fairs or joining in with ‘Tea & Toast’ mornings, to visiting them on exercise or just walking around camp to see who’s around. Every day, across the country our Scripture Readers are doing that and more.
Scripture Reader Dave Hossack works at Catterick Garrison, where a large number of trainees pass through and are usually very busy for the short time they are there. Dave doesn’t often get the chance to meet regularly with individuals and so he talks about having lots of ‘pebble in the shoe’ moments. He shared one of those recently:
‘While I was walking around camp handing out the little Gospel of John booklets, I stopped to speak with a recruit who was on stag watching a vehicle. I asked him what he’d done to deserve that, and he said it was because he was ‘on the biff’ (on the sick) and couldn’t do any training with his platoon. I gave him a Gospel of John and asked if he had a faith. He told me he was an atheist to which I said, “You believe nothing created everything?” He backtracked a bit and said, “I believe in something but haven’t given it much thought.” Pray the Holy Spirit would prompt him to read the Gospel of John.’

This is just one example of the hundreds of conversations our Scripture Readers have every week with hundreds of individuals. Some are big, some are small. Some reap a harvest, some plant a seed.
