SASRA would like to congratulate one of our stalwart Advocates, Rev John Walden, on the award of the Nuclear Test Medal.

In 1957, Rev Walden was an RAF airman and volunteered for the nuclear testing programme, conducted in Australia.  It proved to be a remarkable experience, but one which negatively affected the health and well-being of many involved.  It took many years for the government to properly acknowledge the sacrifice and contribution to our nation’s defence in this programme.  Only a few weeks ago, were the surviving members of the programme awarded the Nuclear Testing Medal, over 60 years since the testing.

Since then, Rev John Walden has committed himself to the ministry and continues to serve in (a very active) retirement, as SASRA’s Harrogate Representative and Advocate in the Starbeck Mission, Harrogate.  His, and his wife Allison’s, support and friendship are especially valued by Regional Manager Andy McMahon in his time in post.

You can read a fuller account of Rev John Walden’s experiences here, in the Harrogate Advertiser.
